NURSING UNIT MANAGER (NUM)/REGISTERED NURSE

Gabrielle is gutsy, intelligent, passionate and, seemingly, unintimidated by anyone or anything. She has a quiet strength that is her greatest asset. And few get to see the more vulnerable Gabrielle that is kept firmly under control.

She grew up the older sister to three brothers in a small country town. She loves being a country girl and she wears it on her sleeve, and in her vernacular, often using classic Australian colloquialisms to make her point.

Gabrielle’s a great nurse; her caring nature borne out of her relationship to her brothers and also to her mother, who she had to care for through a prolonged and ultimately fatal, illness.

Coming from a small town where the nurse is everything, Gabrielle has a wide range of experience. She’s fantastic with patients, using her sensational intuition to great advantage, often finding unorthodox solutions to problems. She might even sing for a sick child if she thinks it will help and if she’s sure no-one else is around.

She’s inherited the great bush tradition of storytelling and is also prone to reeling out country remedies, some passed down via her ancestors, some she just makes up on the spot.

Gabrielle is a strong team leader, who leads very much by example. She’s one of the few who can put Frank Campion firmly in his place… but she’s very good at doing it privately, without fanfare. Her team of nurses are rarely privy to how often she goes to bat for them.

She is unafraid to discipline someone who is out of order. And she doesn’t suffer fools - ‘If you’ve spent as much time as I have knee deep in cow manure, you develop a bloody good bullshit radar.’

But at the end of the day she’s willing to put a grievance or disagreement behind her.

Gabrielle is not a grudge holder. She wants to think the best of people, needs to believe the world is full of honest, hardworking and noble folk. Sadly, she has had that belief shaken too many times to still have a firm grip on it.

She has a temper, and if you catch her in a bad mood (which is rare but it does happen), then it’s best you keep a low profile, ride it out, hope it passes.
