MRU DIRECTOR

Mike is the head of the surgical team at All Saints and has recently established and taken over the running of the new Medical Response Unit.

Mike’s parents immigrated to Australia from war torn Czechoslovakia with nothing and his stoic father’s fits of anger made his childhood home a stressful place in which to grow up. But that didn’t stop Mike from excelling.

A man of extraordinary surgical skill, Mike tends to “throw” people with his seemingly cavalier attitude and “rock ‘n roll” lifestyle. No pristine surgical scrubs for him. He’s much more comfortable in jeans and his cowboy boots. It may not be the image a man of his professional standing tends to “put out there” but Mike doesn’t care – his only real concern is that he leaves at the end of the day having made a difference.

Mike thrives on the rush and adrenaline of on his job and there’s no better thrill than taking a risk against all odds -and protocol- then pulling it off. This tendency makes his colleagues nervous at times but they respect the enfant terrible’s brilliance.

Mike has spent most of his life alone. He walked away from a relationship long ago when his partner announced she was pregnant, and has little to do with the son that resulted. His selfishness on that front might be explained by the one relationship he has managed to maintain - a 20 year romance with morphine addiction.

In recent years, Mike has kicked the morphine habit, and even dabbled with the notion of love but things are never easy on that front. Not when it comes to Mike.

Mike is well travelled and well read but thinks hobbies are a waste of time, although he does love his football (soccer) and boasts a stunning music collection.

He is non-judgemental, but pessimists and obstructionists drive him nuts. Don’t bring him a problem, suggest a solution. And never, ever say “this is hopeless”.

Patients are at ease with him almost immediately. Women love him, men fear him and he gets up Frank Campion’s nose. Mike knows this and it amuses the hell out of him.
